AI nonfiction book writer

An AI nonfiction book writer that shows its sources

The risk with AI and non-fiction is confident, invented facts. Book Factory is built to reduce that: before it writes, it researches your topic and builds a bank of sources, then grounds every chapter in that research and cites it.

You bring the expertise, the angle, and the voice. The AI handles structure, first drafts, and the tedious fact-checking passes — and tells you what still needs your attention before the book is ready.

Free plan: $4 of AI writing included — about 40 chapters — and no API key needed.

How to write a nonfiction book with Book Factory

Real screen recordings of the product.

1

Set the topic, reader, and your angle

Enter the topic (e.g. "AI for Small Business Owners"), who it's for ("non-technical owners with 5–50 employees"), and a direction that captures your point of view — for example, "pragmatic, first-person, heavy on real case studies, allergic to generic advice." You get a chapter-by-chapter outline to review and reorder.

Research, then draft grounded chapters

Book Factory builds a research brief and a source bank for the book. Each chapter is drafted against that research and told to cite sources rather than invent them. Edit in the built-in editor or regenerate with notes.

Verify citations, then build

Citation checks and a publish-readiness review flag unsupported claims, missing research, and structural problems like a missing conclusion. Fix what's flagged, then export EPUB, PDF, or a KDP paperback interior.

Every chapter gets a verdict

Each time a chapter is written or saved, it's scored by Jev, a fast judge model from TypeSafe, against a fixed bank of questions for its book type — plus a continuity pass that reads it beside the chapters before it and checks it against the facts they established. Findings flow straight into the editor pass as concrete fixes.

Approved

No problems flagged.

Needs work

Style issues flagged, each with a specific fix for the editor pass.

Denied

A high-confidence blocking problem — the book won't pass the publish-ready check until it's fixed or you override it as a labelled draft.

Non-fiction checks

  • Unsourced "experts" presented as real people
  • Quotations with no source
  • Invented case studies presented as real events
  • Statistics with no source marker
  • Facts that contradict an earlier chapter
  • Chapters that re-cover earlier ground as if new
  • Motivational filler, hedge stacking, and empty signposting

Then the whole book

Chapter verdicts roll up into checks no single chapter can answer.

One grade for the book

A single book grade in the Quality tab — withheld, with the reason, until enough of the book has been measured to mean something.

A publish-ready check

For fiction and non-fiction. High-confidence problems block the final build; you can answer a finding back with your reason, and a build that goes ahead on one says so.

Consistency across chapters

Facts, names, and events checked against everything earlier chapters established — plus numbering, cross-references, and a real ending.

Numbers that add up

Totals, balances, and percentages are recomputed, so a figure that doesn't add up gets caught instead of printed.

Argument structure

For non-fiction: does the book build toward something, are the chapters in a defensible order, is anything missing or said twice. Advice, not a gate.

Every chapter also gets a slop score: how densely it uses the words and phrasing machine prose overuses, built on the open-source slop-score lists behind the EQ-Bench creative-writing leaderboard.

Built for claim-heavy books

Non-fiction lives or dies on whether readers can trust it. These checks run as part of writing the book, not as an optional extra you have to remember.

  • Research brief and source bank built before chapters are drafted
  • Chapters grounded in the researched facts, with sources cited where relevant
  • Citation verification pass across the manuscript
  • Publish-readiness review that lists blockers before you export a final build
  • Extra caution on health, legal, financial, and safety topics: primary sources preferred, no invented protocols, and readers pointed to qualified professionals

Good fits for AI-assisted non-fiction

The workflow works best when you know the subject and want help getting it organized and drafted.

  • Practical how-to guides and handbooks
  • Workbooks with exercises and checklists
  • Business, career, and self-improvement books
  • Study guides and exam-prep books
  • Textbooks and course companions
  • Books that turn your blog posts, talks, or client work into a structured whole

What a nonfiction outline looks like

  1. 1. Why most small businesses get AI wrong
  2. 2. The five jobs AI is actually good at today
  3. 3. Customer email and support: a first project
  4. 4. Bookkeeping and admin without the busywork
  5. 5. Marketing content that still sounds like you
  6. 6. Choosing tools: cost, privacy, and lock-in
  7. 7. Training your team (and handling the skeptics)
  8. 8. Measuring whether it's working
  9. 9. Your 90-day plan

An illustrative outline for the example topic above. Your outline is generated from your own topic, audience, and direction, and you can edit, reorder, add, or remove chapters.

What it won't do for you

  • Research grounding reduces made-up facts; it doesn't eliminate the need to check them. Read the sources behind any claim that matters.
  • It won't supply first-hand expertise, stories, or data you haven't given it — that's what makes a non-fiction book worth buying, so add it in your direction and edits.
  • Medical, legal, and financial books should be reviewed by a qualified professional before publishing.

Frequently asked questions

Can AI write a nonfiction book?

AI can draft a structured non-fiction book quickly, but the valuable parts — your expertise, examples, and judgment — have to come from you. Book Factory drafts the structure and chapters, grounds them in research with citations, and flags what still needs checking, so you spend your time adding substance instead of starting from a blank page.

Does it make up facts or sources?

It's designed not to. Chapters are drafted against a researched source bank and instructed not to invent facts or sources, a citation-verification pass checks the manuscript, and the Jev judge blocks a chapter that presents an unsourced expert, quotation, or case study as real. No AI is perfect, so treat flagged claims seriously and check any fact your reader will rely on.

Can I publish my AI-assisted nonfiction book on Amazon KDP?

Book Factory exports KDP-ready EPUB and paperback files and drafts your listing copy. Amazon asks authors to disclose AI-generated content when publishing, so check KDP's current content guidelines and disclose accordingly.

Is it free?

Yes. The Free plan includes $4 of AI writing — about 40 chapters, or roughly three typical books — with every feature and export format and no API key needed. If you use it up, you can add your own Anthropic key in Settings and keep writing. A Pro plan is coming soon.

Who owns the book?

You do. Your books are private to your account, Book Factory does not train on your content, and you can export everything at any time and publish it wherever you like.

Try it on your own book

Start with an outline — it takes about a minute and the Free plan covers it.
